Sony‘s strategy has not been very clear when it comes to its devices’ hierarchy. But at MWC, the company has announced what it labels as its “flagship”: the Xperia XZ Premium.
Back in 2016, we got the Xperia X Performance, the Xperia Z5 Premium and the Xperia XZ but none of these devices embodied the “one true top line” device for the firm. While the “Z” series appears to be all over, the “X” is being rather restructured by deriving some ideas from its forerunners, resulting in the “Xperia XZ Premium” which is Sony’s only diamond point, once more.

The device offers all the flagship features you’d anticipate. It features a pointlessly overkill 4K panel with HDR technology. The battery comes in at a decent 3230mAh. In addition, the Xperia XZ Premium will carry the longed-for Snapdragon 835. There’s an Adreno 540 GPU to back it up, and 4GB of RAM. The company is boosting its new camera big time as well. It’s a 19MP shooter that regardless of its relatively low f/2.0 aperture, includes a big, 1/2.3″ sensor that can be great for low-light performance.
According to Sony, the technology is borrowed from its α and CyberShot cameras and is branded on the new flagship as “Motion Eye”. Super slow motion, which lets you take clips at an amazing 960 frames per second is one of its most notable features. There’s “Predictive Capture” too that starts to capture images the moment the sensor detects movement, and takes 4 pictures each time you press the shutter button.
The Xperia XZ Premium, which resembles previous Xperia devices with regard to its design, makes uses of a continuous loop structure that curves the Gorilla Glass 5 glass around it. Couple of straps of aluminum cover the top and bottom that conceal a 3.5mm headphone jack. The right side has the fingerprint reader-housing home button in addition to the volume rocker, and a dedicated camera shutter. Yes the device appears to be classy. However, the top and bottom bezels are yet very big for a 2017 flagship.
You may find some other interesting things though. The device supports SD cards to expand its 64GB of internal storage, and the shell is rated IP68 for water and dust resistance.
The Flagship device of Sony will start selling worldwide as an unlocked GSM model in “late Spring”. The price is not known yet but we do have an idea about the color: Luminous Chrome and Deepsea Black include the two choices.
